Clean Streets
It is difficult for visitors coming to the part of Downtown Brooklyn, served by the MetroTech BID, to fully grasp the extraordinary visual impact we have on the area.
More than ten years ago, prior to the efforts of our sanitation team, the Mayor's Office of Operations Project Scorecard reported that only 40% of our streets and 67% of our sidewalks were acceptably clean. Even worse, fully 23 % of the streets and 10% of the sidewalks were reported to be "filthy." Now our district is one of the City's cleanest areas, with over 95% of both our streets and sidewalks rated clean.
But as impressive as these official Scorecard percentage ratings are, they are but one measure of the effectiveness of our effort. Data compiled by the BID shows that we collect on average, up to 39,000 pounds of litter monthly; almost 20 tons!
In addition to this daily work, our Sanitation team takes care of graffiti removal, poster removal from signs and light poles and maintains 20 additional specially designed litter baskets that supplement the City Department of Sanitation. They also maintain area trailblazers, over 90 street planters and the planted Adams Street center median, directory sign system, and seasonal tree maintenance.
