Willoughby Plaza
During summer of 2006, the MetroTech BID and the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) implemented an innovative Pilot Project by temporarily closing Willoughby Street between Adams Street Service Road and Pearl Street, and the Adams Street East Service Road to create the Willoughby Pedestrian Plaza.
The Pilot Project was intended to improve pedestrian movement and safety by creating a plaza, improving pedestrian circulation and providing a safe public refuge area in addition to a public amenity for the people of Downtown Brooklyn. It has become a place to sit, relax, talk to friends, have a snack, eat lunch, and listen to good music or to watch the world go by.
The goal of creating a new public open space was realized. Pedestrians, shoppers and office workers overwhelmingly enjoy the Plaza and thought it was a great addition to the Downtown Brooklyn landscape. The universal acceptance of the “test” program, has now led to the DOT to make the changes permanent and the BID is committed to continuing maintenance and support.
